A second chance can be generous without being unlimited.

GRATITUDE

WHAT THIS MEANS

Forgiveness and open-endedness get treated as one gesture, and they are not. You can genuinely give somebody another go while still holding a point at which the arrangement would change, and saying that plainly is kinder than a warmth that quietly wears out. Unlimited chances tend to end in a withdrawal that arrives without warning, which is harder on everyone than a limit named at the beginning.

If you are extending a second chance, say what it includes and what would change things. Being clear about the edge is what makes the space inside it real.

A QUESTION TO SIT WITH

How many chances have you given without deciding on the last?
