A person can forgive an error while choosing a different arrangement for the future.

GRATITUDE

WHAT THIS MEANS

Forgiveness gets confused with reinstatement. Letting go of anger and returning to exactly the previous setup are separate choices, and treating them as one leaves people with only two options: stay bitter or pretend nothing occurred. You can hold no grudge whatsoever and still decide that a particular responsibility now sits somewhere else.

If something has gone wrong, work out which part is about the feeling and which is about the arrangement. Say the first warmly and the second plainly, so nobody has to guess whether the change is a punishment.

A QUESTION TO SIT WITH

What could you forgive while still changing how things work?
