The people you come home to should be included in the life you are working toward.

Ambition has a way of treating the present as a waiting room. The long hours are for the family, the sacrifice is for later, and the people it is all supposedly for are the ones seeing least of you while it happens. A future built entirely at their expense can arrive to find that the closeness it was meant to fund got spent along the way.

Ask the people at home what they would want more of now, rather than in three years. Then move one thing in the present to match the answer, even a small one.
