Independent lives become easier when asking for help does not require a dramatic reason.

People who value their independence often set the threshold for asking impossibly high, so that only an emergency qualifies. Small problems then get carried alone until they become large ones. A request does not have to be justified by crisis. Ordinary reasons are enough: the ladder is awkward, the appointment is far, two hands would be faster.
Ask for something minor this week that you could technically manage alone. Notice that the person helping is not inconvenienced in the way you imagined. Lowering the threshold now is what keeps the harder ask possible later.
What small help would you ask for if it needed no excuse?
Free, with nothing to buy inside it.
