A person who notices the effort behind an ordinary result is seeing more than the finished surface.

REFLECTION

WHAT THIS MEANS

Finished things hide their making. A meal on the table, a tidy room, a report that arrives on time, a child dressed and calm: each looks effortless precisely because the effort was successful. Most people respond to the surface, which is why competence tends to become invisible and then expected.

Pick one ordinary good thing around you today and work out what had to happen for it to exist. Say that to the person responsible rather than complimenting the result. Naming the effort is what tells them it was not taken for granted.
