Needing help does not remove someone’s judgement about what helps. People in difficulty are often treated as unreliable narrators of their own situation, so their refusals get read as pride or denial rather than as accurate information. Usually they have tried several things already and know which ones cost them. Overriding that, with the best intentions, adds another problem to the one they came with.
Ask what would be useful and take the answer at face value, including the parts that surprise you. If they rule something out, believe them.
