The person translating for others should have time to understand before being expected to answer.

GRATITUDE

WHAT THIS MEANS

Translating is two jobs stacked together and performed live. The person has to understand fully and then rebuild the meaning in another language, often for people who cannot check the result, and often about something that matters. Pressure pushes anyone in that position toward an approximation. What looks like slowness is usually accuracy trying to happen.

Give the person doing this room to take in the whole thought before you expect words back. Speak in shorter stretches and pause at natural joins. Ask once whether they need a moment, and treat the answer as information rather than as an apology.
