The cost of keeping something belongs beside the cost of getting it.

RESILIENCE

WHAT THIS MEANS

Purchase price is loud and upkeep is silent. Storage, cleaning, maintenance, insurance, the low hum of attention that anything owned takes from you, none of which appears on the tag. Some things cost almost nothing to buy and a great deal to live with. The real question is not what it takes to get it but what it takes to keep it for a year.

Before the next thing arrives in your home, put a rough number on a year of keeping it. Include the space it occupies and the effort it will ask for. If that total changes your mind, it was worth working out.
