A person receiving care still deserves decisions that belong entirely to them.

STILLNESS

WHAT THIS MEANS

Care creates a slope. Helping with the difficult things makes it natural to help with the ordinary ones, then to arrange them, then to decide them, and the movement is gradual enough that nobody sees where it changed. Some decisions should stay entirely with the person even when your version would go better. What is being protected is not the outcome but the ability to have a life of your own.

Name a few things that belong to them alone and keep your hands off those, including when you disagree. Ask rather than arrange. Where safety genuinely requires a limit, say so plainly and leave everything outside that limit untouched.
