A new role asks you to learn the people as carefully as the tasks.

LEADERSHIP

WHAT THIS MEANS

Tasks are written down somewhere and people are not. Yet almost everything actually moves through the people, through who to ask, who needs warning before a change, who has been carrying something quietly for years and would rather not explain it again. Learning the work while ignoring that leaves you technically competent and unable to get anything done.

Spend some of your first weeks finding out who does what, including the parts that appear on no list. Ask people how they prefer to be contacted and what usually goes wrong. Take the answers seriously, since they will save you more time than any process document.
