The recipe in a familiar handwriting contains more than instructions for dinner.

GRATITUDE

WHAT THIS MEANS

Handwriting carries the person who made it. A page in a hand you know holds the pressure of someone’s pen, their abbreviations, the note in the margin about baking it longer, and all of that arrives before the ingredients do. What you are holding is partly a record of how somebody thought about feeding people.

If you have something like this, cook from it rather than copying it out. Let the smudges stay. And if there is someone still around whose hand you would want on paper, ask them to write one down for you while asking is easy.
