Beliefs can become social possessions that people defend for reasons beyond their content.
REFLECTION
REFLECTION
An opinion held long enough stops being only an opinion. It becomes a membership card, a reason certain people call you, a thing your family expects you to say at dinner, and abandoning it would cost more than being wrong does. That is why arguments about evidence so often go nowhere: the evidence was never what was holding the position up. Recognising this in yourself is uncomfortable and considerably more useful than recognising it in others.
Pick a view of yours and ask what changing it would cost socially. If the answer is anything at all, examine the belief with that in mind.
Which opinion of yours would cost you friends to change?
