A short ride for one person can be the manageable part of another person’s long journey.

REFLECTION

WHAT THIS MEANS

The same distance means different things depending on what surrounds it. Twenty minutes in a car is nothing to the person driving and may be the only feasible section of a day that also involves two buses, a wait, and a walk somebody’s knees will complain about. Offering to cover that section is a much larger favour than its cost to you suggests. Most useful help works like this: small at one end, structural at the other.

Ask what part of the journey is hardest rather than whether someone needs a lift. Then take that part, and do not make a thing of it.

A QUESTION TO SIT WITH

Whose long day does your small favor quietly shorten?
