The noise that disappears into your background may remain exhausting to someone else.

REFLECTION

WHAT THIS MEANS

You stop noticing a sound because your own hearing filed it away, and not everyone’s does that. The fan, the music, the open-plan hum sit at the edge of your awareness and in the middle of somebody else’s. They may not mention it, partly because it feels like a strange thing to ask for. Silence about a noise is not evidence that it costs nothing.

Ask once, plainly, whether the background in a shared space is workable for the people in it. If turning it down is within your power, do it without needing the case argued. Rooms are easier to change than the people expected to endure them.
