The place remembered fondly may have been kind in ways you understood only later.

GRATITUDE

WHAT THIS MEANS

Some kindnesses are only legible in retrospect. The job that gave you time, the household that never asked what you were contributing, the town where nobody hurried you: at the time these felt like the ordinary conditions of life, because you had nothing to compare them with. It takes leaving, and finding somewhere less generous, to see what was being provided. That delay is not ingratitude; it is how comparison works.

Think of a place you look back on warmly and try to name what it actually gave you. If anyone responsible is still reachable, tell them, since they probably never knew either.
