A dance floor welcomes more people when skill is not the price of participation.

Any room that quietly requires competence to enter is smaller than it looks from inside it. When ability is the price of admission, most people stand at the edge and call it preference. Welcome is not a mood in a room, it is a set of decisions about what has to be true before you can join in. Lower that requirement and the same floor holds twice as many people.
If you run anything, look for the hidden entry cost and take it out. If you are the confident one, be visibly ordinary early on, because nobody joins a floor where everyone already looks good.
Where could you lower the entry price for someone hesitant?
Free, with nothing to buy inside it.
