The music sets a pace, but the dancers still negotiate how to inhabit it.

A constraint sets terms and not outcomes. The tempo is fixed and everything else is still open, which is why two couples on the same floor to the same song are visibly doing different things. Most structures work this way: a timetable, a job description, a family arrangement. People mistake the given part for the whole and then feel more determined by it than they are.
Take something you experience as fixed and separate what is genuinely set from what you have simply been doing. Usually the tempo is not the problem. The room is inside it, and it is larger than it looks from the edge.
Where do you have more freedom inside a fixed structure?
Free, with nothing to buy inside it.
