A person who needs surveillance to behave correctly is borrowing character from consequences.

LEADERSHIP
Behaviour that depends on being watched is not really yours; it belongs to the monitoring. Remove the oversight and it changes, which means what looked like character was consequence management all along. This is worth noticing without harshness, because the arrangement is common and often unexamined.
Find an area where you behave well only because you would be caught, and try holding the standard for a week in a situation with no oversight at all. It is a small experiment and it tells you something important: whether the standard is something you hold or something being held over you.
What would you still do well with nobody watching?
