The dancer returning after years meets both an old memory and a present body.

Coming back to a physical practice after years away is a meeting between two different people. The memory knows exactly how the movement should feel, and the body arrives with its own current information about joints, breath and strength. Neither of them is lying. The trouble is that memory speaks first and louder, and it can turn a real return into a comparison nobody could win.
If you are going back to something, spend the early weeks learning the body you have now rather than testing it against the one you remember. The old knowledge works better as a guide than as a standard.
What would you return to knowing your body has changed?
