Integrity is refusing to become dishonest simply because dishonesty would remain undiscovered.

LEADERSHIP

WHAT THIS MEANS

The likelihood of being caught is a poor foundation for conduct, because it varies constantly and has nothing to do with whether the act is right. If undetectability is your standard, your behaviour is really a function of other people’s attention, and it will change whenever their attention does.

When you notice yourself weighing whether anyone would find out, treat that as a signal that you have already switched standards. Set the detection question aside and ask the other one: would you do this if it were visible. The answer is usually immediate and does not require any further calculation.
