A person’s character can survive mistakes better than repeated excuses.

Mistakes are survivable and even clarifying. What corrodes trust is the pattern of explanation that follows them: the reasons, the context, the circumstances that made it unavoidable each time. People forgive errors readily and lose patience with a permanent defence, because the defence signals that nothing will change.
After your next mistake, try giving the account with no explanation attached. Say what happened and what you will do differently. If context is genuinely needed, offer it afterwards and briefly. The difference in how it lands is larger than the difference in what you said.
Which mistake would be easier for you to admit than excuse?
