A pause in conflict is useful when it preserves a credible way to return.

Stepping away from an argument can be wise or can be an ending dressed as a pause. The difference is whether both people leave believing the conversation will actually happen again. A break taken with a time attached, and without a parting shot, keeps the door usable; one taken by walking out silently teaches the other person that pauses mean abandonment.
Should you need to stop, say when you will pick it up, and then pick it up then. Half an hour, or tomorrow after work. Keeping that small promise does more for the disagreement than anything you might have said in the heat.
Which argument did you pause in a way that allowed returning?
