A neat total can hide the person who carried most of the cost.
REFLECTION
REFLECTION
A single figure is a summary, and summaries are silent about who paid. A project comes in on budget because somebody worked three weekends; a household runs smoothly because one person does the remembering. The total looks tidy from outside precisely because the unevenness inside it has been absorbed by a person rather than reported. Nothing in the number will ever tell you their name.
When something has gone well, ask who absorbed the difference. Then say it out loud, to them and to whoever is reading the total. Recognition is not a substitute for a fairer arrangement, though it is usually the first step toward one.
In your last shared effort, who quietly carried the most?
Free, with nothing to buy inside it.
