A difficult word can make a simple point look more authoritative than necessary.

GRATITUDE

WHAT THIS MEANS

Vocabulary can borrow authority the idea has not earned. A plain thought dressed in a technical word sounds researched, and listeners hesitate to question what they cannot quite parse, which is exactly the effect that keeps the habit alive. Sometimes the difficult word is precise and necessary. Often it is armour around something anybody could have said clearly.

Take a sentence you wrote or said recently and translate it into words a friend outside your field would use. If the meaning survives, keep the simple version. If it collapses, you have found where the hard word was doing real work.
