A secret can protect a surprise or preserve an arrangement that depends on someone not knowing.

LEADERSHIP

WHAT THIS MEANS

Two very different things share the word. One kind of secret lasts a few weeks and ends with somebody delighted; the other holds a situation in place that would change if the person found out, and it usually protects whoever is keeping it. Carrying them can feel similar, which is why the distinction has to be made deliberately. Ask who the not-knowing serves.

If you are holding something back, answer that question honestly for each thing you carry. If it protects the other person’s pleasure, keep it. If it protects your comfort at their expense, start working out how to say it.
