The object that opens a home can remain ordinary until somebody cannot find it.

Some things are noticed only through their failure. A key is unremarkable for years, handled without thought, and then for ten minutes it becomes the most important object in your life while you stand outside in the rain going through pockets. Importance and attention are badly matched in daily life. The load-bearing pieces are usually the ones that never ask for anything.

List the few things everything else depends on: keys, documents, a phone, one person with a spare. Give them a fixed place. Ten minutes of arrangement now buys back an afternoon of panic later.
