A checklist is strongest when the hands using it understand the work behind its words.

Checklists compress hard-won knowledge into short phrases, and compression only works if the reader can expand it again. Somebody who knows why a step exists will notice when the situation does not match and stop; somebody reading it as instructions will tick the box and miss the thing the line was written to catch. The list quietly assumes a trained reader.
If you use one regularly, learn the reason behind two of its lines this month. If you write one, add the failure each item prevents. Ticking without understanding is how good procedures stop working.
