A recipe becomes yours through the adjustments you remember without consulting the page.

Ownership of a skill shows up in the departures. The page says twenty minutes and you know it wants twenty-five in your oven, that this needs more salt, that the order works better reversed, and none of it is written down because it came from repetition and attention. The recipe was a starting point. What you have now is a version nobody else could have written for you.

Cook or do the familiar thing this week and put your adjustments in the margin. Give the annotated copy to somebody rather than the original. That is the part worth passing on.
