The person cleaning the stove is finishing a meal everyone else considers over.

A meal has two endings, and they do not fall at the same moment. For most people it finishes when the plates are pushed back and the talking softens. For whoever stands at the stove afterwards, it runs on through scrubbing and putting away, in a quieter room, often alone. The gap between those two endings is where a great deal of household work hides.
Next time an occasion winds down, look for the person still moving. Ask what is left rather than whether help is needed, and take one whole task through to the end.
Who is still working when you consider an evening finished?
