A drawing does not need a large subject to reward close attention.

REFLECTION

WHAT THIS MEANS

Size of subject and depth of interest have nothing to do with each other. A study of a folded cloth or a hand at rest can hold as much looking as a scene full of horses, because what rewards you is the attention that went in, not the importance of what was chosen. Great subjects can even work against a picture by supplying meaning the artist never had to earn.

Give one modest picture five minutes this week instead of walking a whole gallery. Notice what changes between the first minute and the fifth, and apply the same patience to something in your own room.

A QUESTION TO SIT WITH

Have you looked at anything ordinary long enough to admire it?
