The category created for convenience can become a story people mistake for nature.
REFLECTION
REFLECTION
Categories usually begin as tools. Somebody needed to sort applications, allocate rooms, or fill in a form, and drew a line where a line was useful. Over time the line stops being remembered as a decision and starts being treated as a fact about the people on either side of it, complete with expectations about what they are like. Nothing about the original convenience justified any of that.
When a label is applied to you or to someone else, it is worth asking who made it and what problem it was solving. Keep using it where it helps with the paperwork, and decline to let it explain a person.
Which label you use for people began as a convenience?
Free, with nothing to buy inside it.
