The path back to a childhood place sometimes leads to understanding instead of return.

Going back to a place you grew up in rarely gives you the thing you went for. The street is smaller, the people have moved, and the feeling you were hoping to meet turns out to have been made of being that age rather than being there. What you get instead is better and harder to describe: a clearer view of what those years were, and of the adults who were managing them.
If you make such a journey, go with understanding as the aim rather than recovery. Ask someone who was there what they remember, and let the visit change what you know.
What did going back somewhere teach you that staying away could not?
Free, with nothing to buy inside it.
