Being told about a problem is not automatically a request to fix it. Often what has been paid you is a different compliment: that you are someone whose sense of things is worth having in the room while they think. Jumping straight to solutions answers a question that was never asked, and it can leave the other person feeling handled rather than heard.
Ask what would help before offering anything. Whether they want ideas, company, or just to say the whole of it out loud is a question that takes four seconds and changes everything after it.
When did you rush to fix what only needed hearing?
