A small hesitation can contain a calculation the confident speaker never had to make.

REFLECTION
A pause before answering is not always uncertainty. Sometimes it is a quick check of what a room can safely be told, or of what a sentence will cost the person saying it. Someone speaking freely may simply have fewer of those checks to run, and their ease gets mistaken for straightforwardness. Reading hesitation as weakness misses the work that just happened inside it.
Notice who in a group pauses, and consider what they might be weighing. Leaving an extra beat before you fill the silence gives that calculation room to finish, and often changes what you get to hear.
Whose pause did you read as doubt rather than careful arithmetic?
Free, with nothing to buy inside it.
