A child dancing to street music understands participation before embarrassment supplies its rules.

RESILIENCE

WHAT THIS MEANS

Small children join in because joining in is what music is for. The idea that dancing in public requires permission, or a certain level of skill, or a reason, arrives later and is taught rather than discovered. What looks like fearlessness is really the absence of a rule they have not been given yet. Most self-consciousness is like this: not a natural state but a set of instructions absorbed from watching adults.

Watch a child do this and notice what stops you doing the same. The rule that holds you back is worth examining at least once, because somebody handed it to you and you never agreed to it.
