An older relative’s favorite story may preserve a time when they felt most capable.

REFLECTION

WHAT THIS MEANS

A story told many times is usually being told for a reason. It often comes from a period when the teller was strong, needed, in charge, and returning to it is a way of staying in touch with that version of themselves. Hearing it again can feel like a loop; from the inside it is closer to visiting. Understanding that changes the repetition from a problem into information about what mattered most.

Next time the story comes round, ask a question inside it rather than steering away. What the kitchen looked like, who else was there, what happened afterwards: small requests that let someone stay somewhere they like being.
