The thing you choose to pass on says something about what you hope will remain understandable.
STILLNESS
STILLNESS
Choosing what to hand down is a statement about what you think will still make sense to somebody living differently. A tool, a recipe, a way of doing something: you are betting that the world it belongs to will not have moved so far that the object becomes a curiosity. That bet says as much about your hopes as about the thing. It is a quiet form of describing what you value.
When you pass something on, say why it mattered rather than only that it did. The explanation is the part that survives translation, and it is what keeps the object from becoming an unexplained possession.
