An animal turns your freedom into a shared arrangement. Staying out late, going away for a weekend, changing your hours: each becomes a question about feeding times, a walk and whether somebody can be there, which is a real constraint rather than an inconvenience to resent. It is also part of what living with a dependent creature means. The tie and the company are the same thing.

If you are considering an animal, work out the dull logistics before the affection decides for you. If you already have one, build the small network now: a neighbour, a friend, a routine someone else can follow.
