Inheritance can offer a starting vocabulary without deciding every sentence you will need.

REFLECTION

WHAT THIS MEANS

What a family hands down is closer to a first language than a finished statement. You are given words for how to eat, how to argue, what counts as decent, what money means, and you use them long before you examine them. Having received the vocabulary does not commit you to every sentence people made with it. Keeping some of the terms while saying different things is not disloyalty, it is what using a language normally involves.

Name one inherited habit you are glad of and one you have quietly revised. Both belong to you, and neither needs announcing.

A QUESTION TO SIT WITH

What did your upbringing give you that you have since revised?
