A retired person’s free afternoon is still theirs to arrange.
STILLNESS
STILLNESS
Free time is not the same as unclaimed time. Someone who no longer goes to work still has plans, rhythms, and things they have been meaning to get to, and an afternoon without an appointment in it is not an afternoon awaiting instructions. The assumption that it is available usually arrives politely, as a small favour that only takes an hour. Repeated often enough, it turns a person’s own days into a rota for everyone else’s convenience.
Ask rather than assume, and ask early enough to be refused. If you are the one being asked, a plain no to the third request is not ingratitude.
Whose free time do you assume is available for your errands?
Free, with nothing to buy inside it.
