Borrowing something successfully means the relationship survives the object’s journey intact.

Lending is less about the item than about what handling it says. When something comes back on time, in the condition it left in, with a word about anything that happened to it, the borrower has shown that your things and your trust are handled as one. When it comes back late or altered without mention, a small residue forms that outlasts the object. Both people feel this before either names it.

If you have something of someone else’s, return it this week with a sentence about how it fared. If you have lent something and gone quiet about it, ask plainly rather than letting resentment ask for you.
