The person introducing you by your job may be missing the part you most enjoy discussing.

REFLECTION

WHAT THIS MEANS

Introductions compress a person into whatever is easiest to say. Your occupation is the handiest label available, so it becomes the version handed to strangers, even when the thing you would happily talk about for an hour is somewhere else entirely. The introducer is not being careless. They simply have one sentence and no way of knowing which sentence you would choose.

Decide what you would rather be introduced by and say it yourself in the first minute. And when you introduce others, ask beforehand what they would like mentioned. It changes the whole shape of the conversation that follows.

A QUESTION TO SIT WITH

What would you rather be introduced by than your job title?
