Embarrassment can make receiving help feel larger than the practical problem itself.
REFLECTION
REFLECTION
The practical part of needing help is often small: a lift, a form filled in, someone reaching a high shelf. What makes it feel heavy is the shame that arrives alongside, the sense that asking says something permanent about you. That extra weight is not a measure of the favour; it is a separate thing that got attached, and it stops a lot of people from asking.
If something would genuinely be easier with help, ask for the small specific version rather than waiting until it is large. Most people are glad to be asked. And when someone asks you, keep it ordinary, which is the kindest thing available.
What help have you refused because asking felt too exposing?
Free, with nothing to buy inside it.
