A title can announce success before the recipient feels settled inside it.
REFLECTION
REFLECTION
Recognition arrives on someone else’s schedule, and the inside of a person rarely catches up on the same day. A new title is a public statement made at a single moment, while feeling capable is something that assembles slowly out of small competences. The gap between the two is ordinary rather than a sign of fraud. Most people who look settled are simply further along in that assembling.
Give yourself a longer horizon than the announcement allows. Name one thing about the role you can already do well, and one you are still learning, and treat the second as work rather than as evidence against you.
Which title arrived before you felt ready to wear it?
Free, with nothing to buy inside it.
