Some people listen only long enough to collect material for their response.

GRATITUDE

WHAT THIS MEANS

Some people are attentive in a way that is purely extractive: they follow closely enough to find the point they want to respond to and stop there. It looks like listening from outside and it produces a conversation where nothing is received, only harvested.

Check yourself for this in your next conversation. Notice whether you are following their meaning or scanning for an opening. If it is the second, put the response aside deliberately and stay with what they are saying until they are done. The difference is felt immediately by the other person.

A QUESTION TO SIT WITH

How much of yesterday’s conversations do you actually remember hearing?
