A familiar story changes when you begin noticing a different character.

REFLECTION

WHAT THIS MEANS

Stories have more people in them than the version you carry. Follow the sister, the neighbour, the one with four lines, and the whole shape rearranges: what looked like a triumph becomes a cost somebody paid, and the hero becomes considerably less admirable. Nothing in the text changed, only where the attention was pointed.

Try this on a story you know well, including one from your own family. Retell an old incident from the position of somebody who was not the main character in your telling. It is uncomfortable and usually more accurate than the version you have been repeating.
