The reader skipping ahead may be protecting themselves from a feeling the writer intended.
REFLECTION
REFLECTION
Skipping is rarely about impatience alone. Turning pages quickly is often a way of getting past something the writing was about to make you feel, and the mind is good at dressing that up as boredom or as being short of time. It is a reasonable thing to do; not every day has room for what a book is offering.
If you notice yourself hurrying through a passage, you can stop and ask what you were moving away from, then decide whether today is the day for it. Either answer is fine. Coming back later is a real option, and books wait well.
What do you skip past to avoid feeling it fully?
