A celebration can preserve its meaning while changing the hour, place, or meal.

The point of an occasion is not usually where it is held. Families often defend the arrangements long after the arrangements have stopped serving anybody, so a gathering becomes an endurance test about timing and travel rather than the thing it was meant to be. What actually carries the meaning is who is there and that it happened at all.

If the usual shape has become hard for someone because of health, distance, or money, propose a different one before the day rather than after. Earlier, shorter, closer, simpler. The occasion will survive the change more easily than the people will survive keeping it exactly.
