Every excuse eventually becomes part of the identity you use it to protect.

REFLECTION

WHAT THIS MEANS

An excuse begins as a description of a circumstance and ends as a description of you. The first few times, it explains why something did not happen. After enough repetitions, it becomes a permanent feature you now have to defend, because abandoning it would mean admitting all those earlier occasions were choices. The excuse recruits you into protecting it.

Find the reason you have given most often for something you have not done. Ask whether it is still accurate or merely familiar. If it has quietly become part of how you describe yourself, that is the sign to test it rather than repeat it.

A QUESTION TO SIT WITH

Which excuse have you used so long it now feels like a trait?
