Discipline is doing quietly what your ego wants applause for doing once.

RESILIENCE

WHAT THIS MEANS

Ego wants the version with witnesses, the impressive day, the story you can tell afterwards. Discipline is the same behaviour repeated on the days when there is nothing to report and no one to notice, which is where nearly all of the actual result is produced. One is a performance and the other is a practice. They can look identical for a single afternoon and diverge completely over a year.

When you feel like announcing something you have started, try holding it for a while instead. Let the work accumulate before it becomes a story. What you do in the unwitnessed stretch is what determines whether there is a story at all.

A QUESTION TO SIT WITH

What good habit do you only keep when somebody might notice?
